Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kappa Phi?

We are a Non-Greek Christian National Sisterhood on the campus of Kent State University. We are based on the four pillars of Service, Study, Worship, and Sisterhood. Through varieties of activities, Kappa Phi inspires sisters to create lifelong sisterhood. We create a safe environment for sisters to come as their authentic selves!

Do I need to go through any kind of recruitment?

No, but we do have fun rush events! Each semester we have a Rose Tea Party with special treats and all information you need to know on joining our sisterhood. If you would like to attend please fill out the interest form in our link tree.

How do I join?

Contact us today and we will invite you to an informational meeting or our next chapter. Fill out the interest form in our link tree.

Is there a fee to join?

Dues are normally $60 a semester. Dues cover the cost of your national membership, T-shirts, merchandise, and fun activities.

What if I am unsure about payment?

If you need assistance it is available. We never want money to be the reason you can't join Kappa Phi!

What if I don't know what I believe?

That is totally okay! We have sisters from all different faith backgrounds and faith journeys.

Will my associations of any kind affect me from being included in the group?

Kappa Phi is accepting, loving, and respectful to all. We welcome your differences and encourage members to put their passions towards our service chapters in support. Kappa Phi is associated with United Christian Ministries on campus. This means we "affirm people of all sexual and gender identities. We are the only united Christian Organization that is an official ally of the LGBTQ+ community." In addition, "we are an organization that believes in science and the importance of racial justice." Although we are Christians we welcome people of all religions and non-religious members as well. Kappa Phi takes pride in maintaining a loving and Christian atmosphere.

Can juniors and seniors join?

Yes! We accept all KSU students including non-undergraduate students.

What kind of sorority events do you have?

Sisters participate in special initiation ceremonies, Big/Littles, paddle decorating, formals, receive Kappa Phi apparel through dues, participate in sisterhood events, date parties, formal, and weekly chapters!

What if I want to join but don't know anyone?

Most of our sisters joined and did not know a single sister. We are excited to get to know you through chapter events!

Can I join and still be in Greek Life?

Yes! Kappa Phi is not affiliated with Panhellenic Council.

Can I join even if I don't live on campus?

Yes! We include all sisters even if they are living at home and studying abroad if they choose to participate!

Can I try it out if I'm unsure?

Nonmembers are welcome to join early meetings as well as our Rose Tea informational night. Please let us know if we can answer any more questions!

 Are chapter meetings required?

We never want you to feel pressured if you can't make a meeting! We value your education and health first. When a sister can't make a chapter we'll miss her! But we understand college is a busy time.

When do you meet?

We usually meet every Monday at 7:00 pm.

Advice for a new member?

True sisterhood takes time and love. You get out of Kappa Phi what you put into it! And most of all we are excited to meet and get to know anyone interested in Kappa Phi!

Do you have to be a specific denomination to be in Kappa Phi?

No! We are founded on Jesus Christ and the Bible. We have sisters from every denomination and are happy to lead you to grow in your faith as well as Christian sisterhood. We welcome potential members even if they are unsure what they believe.

How big is your chapter?

We currently have about fifteen members and are building back up since a large class graduated. Our chapter doubled in size in both the fall and spring semester last year and we aim to do that again! Our chapter of Alpha Lambda was nationally recognized and won the LeSourd Cup June of 2021 for the 2019-2021 years because of growth despite the limitations of the pandemic.

Is there any hazing or something I have to do to get in?

We have a zero tolerance policy for hazing and have not had a problem with it. It is genuine when we say we want you as our sister. We are women of Christ who lead with love. We won't turn you away because of your appearance, number of social media followers, ability to pay dues, or try to judge you in any way. Our sisterhood strives to be nothing but love, respect, and support for one another. There is no pressure to join if you show interest either. You deserve nothing but to be welcomed.

The rush theme for 2020 was "Come as You Are" and our chapter has adopted this as our own motto. We couldn't be more excited to get to know the real you!
